Everything went perfect with my car rental the entire trip. The only problem that leaves a sour taste in my mouth, which is making me leave a less than positive review, is that when I went to pick up the car I was charged a “Young Driver Fee.” While I am under 25, I had previously confirmed over the phone with an employee at the store that presenting my AAA membership card would wave the young driver fee. However when I land in Los Angeles to pick up my car, I am charged practically double what I expected. The employee at the counter informed me that because I “did not book the rental through AAA,” I would not qualify for the discount. Very unprofessional. My family has used Hertz for all of our vacations growing up, and now that I am taking my own trips I felt comfortable going with a company I knew. After this I may reconsider my loyalties.

I reserved a regular SUPPLIER CHOICE vehicle, and when I arrived at the Herz in North Hollywood they claimed that I reserved an EV, which I did not. I showed them my reservation that clearly says "Supplier Choice" and they still refused to allow me to take a regular vehicle. They said I had to take their EV, BUT the one they wanted to give to me only had around 51% battery and would only take me "161 miles" according to the agent. The whole purpose of me renting a car was because I needed to travel yesterday so I had to have something that would take me around 400 miles. He said my only option would be to upgrade to their only available SUV. As I had to travel that day, I had no choice, and was subsequently charged an extra $212.28 to drive it off the lot. After I was forced to pay the extra fee, they told me their SUV had an empty tank. So, I had to wait at the Herz location for 45+ minutes for them to fill it. Once I was able to drive it away with a full tank, the car was dirty and the minute I got on the freeway the "Oil Change" light came on. I would like, at the very LEAST a refund of the upgrade charge since it was not my fault Herz booked me for the incorrect vehicle type. But they refuse to help me. Also for giving me practically no option but to upgrade for an incredibly steep additional price just to give me a faulty car that needed gas, oil, and was dirty. Because they have not helped me at all with any of these issues, I won’t be renting with Hertz again.

Pros:

The car was clean on the inside and they made sure my phone was connected via Bluetooth before I left. Drop off was easy.

Cons:

They rented the car I reserved to someone else. They only had larger cars, small SUV, available. I needed the gas mileage for an 800 mile trip to help take car of my dad after a week in the hospital and 3 surgeries. I had even called the facility directly to make sure I could get on the road asap. Very frustrating. Why make a reservation?! As I dropped off the vehicle, someone else was being told they only had small SUV's left, do they even have smaller cars?

Cons:

I returned it to the location I rented from and was told they couldn't give me a ride to the repair shop my car was in. They told me after I had checked in that they could void the return and I could drive to a different location and return it there instead and they would be able to give me a ride from that location. When I did that I was told by the second location that I was a gallon of gas short and they would charge me. The first location checked me in at 5/8 a tank which is where it was when I got the car, but the second location said it was at 1/2 a tank. The 2 locations are only 3.5 miles apart. I could not have used an 1/8 of a tank. 1/8 in a 12 gallon of tank is a gallon and a half. On a compact car a gallon and a half will get you about 40 miles. Again the distance of the 2 locations was nowhere near 40 miles. I even looked at the gas gauge before I exited the car at the second location and it was still at 5/8. I was already running late for work so I didn't bother arguing and just paid their inflated price for a gallon of gas. Very displeased with the nickel and diming and the inaccurate reading.

Customer service was terrible when picking up our rental. We Made a reservation to only be told they weren’t taking reservations for that day because they didn’t have cars to rent. We waited for an hour to get a car. The agent handling our reservation was very dismissive , rude, and overall unprofessional. There was lack of communication from the agent and simply came off with a bad attitude. Did not walk us through our agreement and simply wanted us out of her way.
