Snow season is here and that means it’s time to dig out the ski gear and start planning an epic mountain break. We’ve pulled together the top Aussie snowfields for the best runs and entertaining après-ski activities. Whether you’re new to skiing, or a long-time shredder, this guide will help you plan an unforgettable winter escape.
Perisher, NSW
Perisher is Australia’s largest ski resort, stretching across Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes and Guthega. With a whopping 47 lifts and whole range of runs that cater for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, you’re bound to find something that is fun and safe. If you’re new to the slopes, we suggest heading to Front Valley to ease yourself in. Alternatively, if you’re a black run expert looking for even more thrills, venture out to the Terrain Park, home to Australia’s largest alpine half-pipe! Is skiing not on your list altogether? Head to Tube Town to get amongst a fun snow tubing experience.
Après-Ski
As you wrap up your last run of the day, head to Sundeck, Australia’s highest hotel, for a well-earned beer and panoramic views of Front Valley. For those looking to relieve their aches and pains, Perisher Valley Hotel’s indoor heated pool is just the remedy you are looking for.

How to get there: The best way to reach this resort is by car. Perisher is roughly a six-hour drive from either Sydney or Melbourne, and a two-and-a-half hour drive from Canberra. Head to the Bullocks Flat Terminal, from where you can hop on the Skitube Alpine Railway to reach the resort.

Thredbo, NSW
Thredbo is predominantly an intermediate level resort. However, if you’re new to skiing, head to Friday Flats for an easier run. If you’re there in July and August, you are in for a treat as Thredbo offers a magical twilight skiing experience, with Friday Flat staying open until 7pm every Thursday and Saturday night!
Après-Ski
Start your day on the mountain for a “pre-ski” brekky on the slopes at the Merritts Mountain House as a great start to your day. For lunch, head to the famous Eagles Nest Restaurant for a warm hot chocolate and delicious midday recharge. If you are looking for a fun night out, make your way to the Alpine Hotel’s famous Mumm Poolside Bar, which also features an outdoor heated pool and spa and crackling fire pits. There’s also Schuss Bar to check out if you enjoy live comedy or want to hit the dancefloor.

Definitely don’t miss the flare run on Saturday nights, where advanced skiers and snowboarders glide down Friday Flat with flaming flares, creating an amazing light show. Bet you didn’t know this was a 30-year-old Thredbo tradition?
How to get there: Thredbo is located right near Perisher in the Snowy Mountains, so driving is the best option here as well. Remember, you can hire a car using our car search tool which helps you reach the mountain even if you’re flying in from overseas or another state.

Falls Creek, VIC
Located in northeast Victoria, Falls Creek is a fan favourite with scenic runs available for all levels. Grab a lift pass to take you up to the Summit and Wombat’s Ramble. Remember to take in the amazing views of the beautiful Alpine National Park as you glide down the Falls to the Hotham Alpine Crossing Trail. This resort is also a top spot if you’re into cross country skiing, as it hosts the best country trails in Australia.
Après-Ski
Whilst on the slopes, enjoy a glass of mulled wine on the terrace of Cloud 9. Head back down to the village for the ultimate après-ski experience, where you can indulge in delicious fish and chips at Elk at Falls in the heart of the village, or go to Huski to try their delectable duck omelette.

Did you know that, at 2.2 kilometres, Wombat’s Ramble is Australia’s longest run? For a different experience, the run is open at night on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
How to get there: As a 100% ski-in ski-out resort, Falls Creek is car-free. If you’re planning on driving, as most do, there is on-mountain parking and then a fleet of snow-cat vehicles to take you to your accommodation.

Mt Buller, VIC
Mt Buller is renowned for its bike trails and mountain footpaths in summer, but this resort is also a top winter playground with fantastic downhill ski slopes and terrain parks. Kick off your skiing at Bourke Street, located at the centre of the mountain, to set you up for a great day on the slopes. If skiing is not your thing, book a snowshoe tour to take you through the stunning mountain scenery.
Après-Ski
As Melbourne’s closest ski resort, the après-ski options here are top-notch. The Burger Haus offers a delicious range of burgers – special mention must go to the spicy Afterburner. Another option is to follow the locals by heading to Tirol Cafe, perched at the top of Shakey Knees Chairlift. For some R&R, unwind at Mt Buller’s Breathtaker, which is Australia’s highest day spa!

Before you hit the slopes, grab a coffee at the nearby Grimus Grind, a local gem serving some of the best beans. While you’re there, make a lunch reservation at the ever-popular Snow Pony. The place is always packed, with visitors and tourists alike pining for their modern-style tapas that boasts Thai and Spanish influences!
How to get there: Mt Buller is located about 250 kilometres northeast of Melbourne and connected by the National Highway, making it the most accessible snow resort in Australia. Snag cheap airfare and hire a car to make the journey seamless.
